Product Shelf Life

Nature’s Bar Products are preservative free!

They do NOT contain petroleum based chemicals (Mineral Oil, Petrolatum, Paraffin), chemical emulsifiers (DEA, MEA, TEA), chemical preservatives (Parabens, Urea), Propylene Glycol, artificial colors, stabilizers, or synthetic fragrances.

Our products are not made to sit on store shelves for years and years. Although there are many natural preservatives that exist within the chemical structure of a natural product, they are nowhere near as potent as the synthetic preservatives.

Temperature Changes Can Affect Consistency, Potency, and Longevity.

Many commercial products contain phthalates to stabilize and maintain viscosity (thickness), cocamide DEA, MEA to thicken, stabilize and emulsify, petroleum based oils and waxes to thicken and stabilize and other additives to insure that their products maintain the same consistency through all temperature variations. Our natural organic products do not contain these or any other synthetic additives.

As scented products age, some of the natural essential oil scent may be lost. Pure essential oils just do not have the staying power of synthetic fragrance oils. Over time, natural colors may also fade.

Applicators are especially useful if you are purchasing large sizes of Whipped Butters!

To help preserve freshness as long as possible, we highly recommend using an applicator (like a small spoon or a wooden stick).

Each time you place your warm fingers into a tin or jar, you melt some of the butter which can change the consistency of the product, and introduce bacteria and other contaminants into the product.

Product Shelf Life Chart

Since we manufacture all of our own products in small batches to ensure freshness, suggested “use by dates” are based on date of purchase.

Soaps: We recommend that you use your all natural soaps within twelve months of purchase especially if they are scented. Natural soaps are normally softer than commercial soaps because they retain their natural glycerin and contain no hardening chemicals or synthetic waxes.

To maximize the life of your soap, keep it in a well-drained soap dish so it can dry between uses.

Whipped Butters: Use within 6 months of purchase or 2 months after opening.

Lip & Beard Balms: Use within 3 to 6 months to ensure effectiveness and no loss or change in texture.

Body Scrubs: Use within 6 months of purchase or 4 months after opening for best results and no loss or change in texture.

Bath, Body & Face Oils: Most botanical oils oxidize over time and eventually become rancid. When an oil becomes rancid it has a sharp, bitter, unpleasant aroma. Since some oils have a naturally sharp, distinctive or odd odor even when fresh (like Neem, and others), take time to educate your nose by smelling the oils when they are fresh. To achieve the best potency please use our oils within 6 months of purchase or 4 months after opening.

A Common Question is, “Should I Refrigerate My Products?”

Refrigerating some of our products will prolong shelf life. Products like the bath, body and face oils can easily be refrigerated, but some of the oils may become thick or even solid when very cold.  If this happens, simply place the under some warm water.

As mentioned above, temperature changes can affect consistency. We don’t necessarily recommend that you refrigerate your moisturizers, especially the whipped butters.

If you live in a warm, humid climate, make sure to keep your natural products in a cool, dry place. Do not leave in a hot environment. Keep away from direct sunlight, heaters, and the inside of your vehicle during warm and sunny weather.

Melting Alert

We do not use synthetic stabilizers or waxes.  We do not formulate our light and fluffy body butters with loads of beeswax. As a result, our delicate natural products packaged in glass jars and metal tins are sensitive to temperature changes.

During very warm weather, products may soften or even melt in transit as they sit in warm mail trucks, warm offices, and hot vehicles.

We use more protective packaging in the heat of summer, so that products can make their journey safely.

However, since melting is a natural reaction to heat and we have no control over the conditions during transit or delivery, please understand that we cannot be responsible for melted products.

We have the same problem as companies who make and ship fine chocolates during summer months!

**Melting is especially a problem for long distance customers outside Abuja as orders travel far distances in warm trucks and cargo holds.

What to Do About Melting

On sunny or warm days it is best to refrigerate BEFORE opening the jars or tins.  If you open items, especially those in tins, to check if melting has occurred, they may spill out and make a mess!

The quality and healing properties of our products are not affected by melting.

Whipped Butters: Place it in the refrigerator. The melting will not affect the quality of the whipped butter as a great moisturizer, but the whipped consistency will change. It will become more like a body balm.

Whipping adds tiny air bubbles (just like whipping cream) that increase the size, lighten the density and change the texture, making the butter light and fluffy. If a whipped product melts, the air bubbles are collapsed, so the volume is decreased. So although the jar was filled to the top, if the butter melts, there will be less volume in the container and the color will change.  The container may actually look half full.

We have had customers scoop out the butter and whip it back up with an electric whisk beater. The butter has to be very cold for this to work and one jar might be too little to work with.

Sugar Scrubs: Place in the refrigerator. As it begins to harden up–give it a stir and place it back in the refrigerator until firm. Again because it is a whipped product, the container will have less volume as the whipped butters melt.

What Are We Doing to Help the Problem?

During hot weather we do our best to protect our products from melting in transit.

  • We check every product before it is packed for delivery
  • We have switched many of our products to glass jars with aluminum twist lids to help prevent leakage
  • We wrap our delicate products in bubble wrap or other padding to add another layer of insulation

As a result, most products delivered in warm weather, within Abuja, may arrive without melting. But please understand, there is no way that we can deliver products within and outside Abuja and ensure complete control over the high heat temperatures of summer and the delivery time taken by delivery companies.

Although our soaps may sweat in humid weather, they will not melt!

Why Does the Melting Problem Exist?

One of my biggest challenges as a formulator of natural skin care products is controlling the effect of outside temperature. There are times I create an excellent product during the harmattan season only to discover the product is too soft in the summer/rainy season.

Our beard balms, whipped butters, and lip balms, high in natural oils and butters, are formulated to be a semi-soft solid at room temperature. When applied to our warm skin, they instantly melt, providing an emollient, nourishing and penetrating product.

We often receive questions as to whether our soaps, and other natural products are safe to use during pregnancy.

We recommend that expectant mothers check with their midwife or physician before changing a skin care routine with our products, or any other line of products.

There is nothing in our all natural basic soap or other products that could cause a problem in pregnancy. Topically applying the herbs present in many of our soaps, is also not a problem. Your skin will absorb much less herb from the soap than if you would sprinkle them on your food.

The issue that seems to be of most concern is the use of essential oils during pregnancy. When there is a growing baby to consider, if you are at all uncertain as to the safety of an essential-oil containing product, or any ingredient, please consult your doctor, midwife or health care professional!

Even if you have never had sensitive skin in the past, you may notice that a product you have been using for several years now irritates your skin. The stretching belly is often the most sensitive spot. Other potential problem areas include the hips, thighs and bottom where the skin may become dry and flaky.

Although the exact cause is not known, raging hormones do make you more sensitive to a wide range of things and also your skin is thinning and stretching as you, and your baby, grow.

These changes can behave in unpredictable ways. For example, if you have eczema you may suffer from major flare-ups or complete remission during pregnancy.

Keep your body well moisturized and avoid products that contain synthetic additives, colorants, fragrance or preservatives. Any of these can exacerbate sensitive skin problems.

Before trying a new product, you can always do a patch test to test for sensitivity.

Young Children

We often receive questions as to whether our soaps, and other items are safe to use on young children. A baby’s skin, so thin and delicate, is no place for harmful synthetic chemicals. Sadly, even some of the most trusted baby brands add nasty chemicals to their products.

Our products contain no artificial colors or fragrances. If your child has sensitive skin, you can always do a patch test to test for sensitivity. It is best to add only one new soap at a time and use it for a while before switching to a new soap.
